The Descent Before the Ascent

Astrology can show us seasons of ascent: visibility, momentum, clarity, connection, and the feeling that life is opening. But it can also show us descent; periods when familiar identities, plans, relationships, or certainties fall away.

Descent is not always a failure or a detour from the life you were meant to live. Sometimes it is the necessary movement inward, downward, and closer to the roots of something. It asks us to meet what has been neglected, grieved, denied, or outgrown before we can carry a new version of ourselves forward.

In myth, descent is the journey into the underworld: the place of loss, initiation, truth, and transformation. In a chart, we may recognize that territory through a major Pluto, Saturn, Neptune, or eclipse transit; through the 4th, 8th, or 12th houses; or through any season that brings us face-to-face with what can no longer remain unchanged.

The important thing is not to rush toward the ascent. Transformation is not positive thinking over pain. It is allowing the old form to break down enough that something more honest can take shape.

The ascent arrives differently after that. It is not a return to who you were before the descent. It is the gradual realization that you have become someone capable of carrying what you learned below.

Astrology does not promise that every difficult season will feel meaningful while you are inside it, but it can offer a map: a way to locate yourself in the descent, understand its purpose, and recognize when the path upward has begun.
